This Summer half term we will be covering:

This term, Y5 will be reading Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan. Over the next few weeks we will use this text to help us write our own Myths and Legends. We will be focusing on many different Y5 writing techniques and applying these to our written work. For spelling, Y5 will work in dedicated RWI spelling groups. Each child will also need to learn the Y5/6 spelling list by practising these words each week. You may need to further discuss the meaning of words with your child or to help them look up definitions in a dictionary.

For Maths this term, we will be focusing on geometry and statistics. This will include transforming shapes on a graph using reflection and translation and interpreting line graphs and tables. They will also be working on establishing their reasoning and application skills to enable them to solve more complex problems. Your child will also regularly be practising their mental maths skills. It is vital that your child is comfortable recalling things such as number bonds and multiplication tables.

Come and See
Y5's religious topics for this term are 'Freedom and Responsibility' and 'Stewardship'. We will look at how we can protect our planet, taking care of all of God's creations.

The focus for our Science topic this half term is 'The Circulatory System'. We will be learning about the different parts involved in the system and the functions of these and how a healthy lifestyle and diet is important for our bodies.

Our History topic for this half term is 'Why should we thank the Ancient Greeks?' For this we will look at Greek gods, democracy, battles and daily life in Ancient Greece.

PE this half term will be on Friday's. Please ensure your child has a suitable PE kit in on this day as they will be expected to take part in all physical education lessons. All PE kits should be brought into school on a Monday and only taken home on a Friday.

The years 5/6 spelling list can be viewed here for Y5 to practise at home.
