Y1CD 2017 - 2018

Mrs Dohren

Year 1 Teacher

Welcome to Year 1.  We hope the children from Reception have settled and are looking forward to learning lots of new things this year.

This year, we are covering our curriculum in a slightly different way with ‘Topic Weeks’ for Science, History, Geography, Art and Design Technology. This will see us covering each topic intensively for specified weeks throughout the term. We will continue to be teaching PE and Computing on a weekly basis with English, Phonics and Maths on a daily basis. At the heart of our teaching, we will also have our RE Curriculum which is taught in a cycle of topics. Please see below for details of our topics and curriculum.

In the first half term, we will be reading a selection of traditional stories and learning about their main features.

In our writing we will learn how to use capital letters, full stops and finger spaces correctly.

We will also have our daily phonic sessions (Read Write Inc) which will be led in ability groups across KS1. All children will receive spellings from their Read Write Inc teacher every Monday which they will bring home to learn for a test at the end of the week. We will also have daily guided reading sessions to look at reading comprehension as well as handwriting and grammar.

Children will also get a reading book for them to read at home and brought back the following week.

This half term, we will be following the Liverpool Maths plans with a specific focus on place value.

Children will be counting to and across 100, forwards and backwards, beginning with 0 or 1, or counting from any given number.

Children will also be developing their basic maths skills on a daily basis.

Come and See

In the Autumn Term, we will explore the topics, Family and Baptism.

Our topic will be 'Everyday Materials'. Within this topic we will distinguish between an object and the material from which it is made.

During this term, we will be treasure hunters using programmable toys.

We will be learning about what it was like when our grandparents were children.

Music will be taught by Mrs Delve.

Get Set For Life

This will be taught on a weekly basis by Mrs Clein.

Our PE days this half term will be on Friday

It is highly recommended that your child always has a full kit in school, bringing it in on a Monday and taking it home on a Friday as this is beneficial in the case of incidental opportunities for exercise. If, for any reason, your child is unable to do PE, we would appreciate it if you could send a note in to the class teacher explaining the expected duration of this inability to participate.

Should you ever wish to discuss anything about your child, please do not hesitate to contact a member of the Year 1 team in order to arrange an appointment. We will be on the exit gate every evening or, you can contact the office if you wish to request an appointment.
