'To Infinity and Beyond!'

Welcome to Year 1

We will be sharing lots of photographs of all our fabulous work on our Twitter class page. Follow us @ HolyFamilyL8_1B       @HolyfamilyL8_DH

We hope you continue to enjoy looking at all the wonderful things we will be doing in class on our Twitter.

This 1/2 term, our topic is all about space. We will be reading

'Whatever Next' by Jill Murphy

to help to get us writing. Why not visit the library and take a look for yourself?

Our first class trip is to 'Space Port' in September - we hope that it will be out of this world! wink

Why not take a look at Jack Hartmann on YouTube and practise 'Count to 100 and get fit!' - we'll be using it in class regularly.

Our PE days are Tuesday and Friday. Please bring your kit in on a Monday and leave in school all week.

Homwork is sent home on Thursday and is due in by the following Tuesday. Please remember to read at home every night!

RE

Families

We are learning that life is a gift and each of us are unique and loved. We will investigate how our families are all different but represent love and care.

Belonging

We will revisit the sacrament of Baptism and what it brings to our lives. The children will learn how sacraments are gifts of God’s life and friendship.

-Write their own story up.

-HOT TASK- write a story about going on a space adventure.

Daily group reading in class – individual reading books for home.

Maths

The children will be practising counting to and across 100, forwards and backwards, not just from 0 or 1, but from any number. We will practise these skills using number lines, tracks and 100 squares. Watch ‘Count and Get Fit’ on YouTube.

The children will be encouraged to count in 2s, 5s and 10s.

We will be learning to use practical apparatus including multilink, straws and numicon to support their learning.

The children will practise:

1:1 correspondence, give sensible estimates for a group of objects, the conservation of number (the number of objects in a group stay the same regardless of their arrangement), ordinal positions – 1st, 2nd 3rd etc.

Opportunities to learn about 3D shape – spheres.

Science

Space

We are going to be looking at materials, starting with the things that the bear used to build his rocket. What are materials? What materials are common objects made of, what are some of their properties?

As we move towards the clocks going back, we’ll look at seasonal changes associated with Autumn.

Topic

Space / ‘Whatever Next’

Our topic will be underpinned by a wonderful trip to ‘Space Port’ to fire the children’s enthusiasm. We’ll learn about the planets and Neil Armstrong’s moon landing.

The children will consider the bird’s eye view from space – what are the continents and the seas/oceans called? How can we find these in atlases and on a globe?

Who was Neil Armstrong and why was he a significant individual?

Van Gogh painted ‘A Starry Night’, what techniques did he use? We will use a wax resist and water colours and oil pastels.

In DT we’ll create our own healthy picnic for an imaginary moon landing and create a hinged rocket card.

Computing

The children will learn about algorithms to direct a rocket. They will record routes using left / right / forwards / backwards / up and down.

We will use the internet to research space and the planets.
