Y2H 2017 - 2018

Miss Holme

Year 2 Teacher

Welcome to Year 2 at Holy Family. We hope that during the year you will enjoy finding out about all the wonderful things we will be learning in our lessons.

The teachers in year 2 this year are Miss Holme and Mrs Lynch.

This year, we are covering our curriculum in a slightly different way with ‘Topic Weeks’ for Science, History, Geography, Art and Design Technology. This will see us covering each topic intensively for specified weeks throughout the term. We will continue to be teaching PE  and Computing on a weekly basis with English, Phonics and Maths on a daily basis. At the heart of our teaching, we will also have our RE Curriculum which is taught in a cycle of topics. Please see below for details of our topics and curriculum.

English

In the first half term, we will be reading traditional stories with a twist-'The True Story of the 3 Pigs' by Jon Scieszka and 'Beware of the Bears' by Alan MacDonald. We will also be reading traditional stories from other cultures-Baba Yaga by Tony Bradman (a traditional Russian tale) and Zomo The Rabbit by Gerald McDermott (a traditional African tale).

In our writing we will re-tell the stories, write newspaper reports, letters and focus on descriptive language based on where the stories are set.

We will also have our daily phonic sessions (Read Write Inc) which will be led in ability groups across KS1. All children will receive spellings from their Read Write Inc teacher every Monday which they will bring home to learn for a test at the end of the week. We will also have daily guided reading sessions to look at reading comprehension as well as handwriting and grammar.

Children will also get a reading book for them to read at home and brought back the following week.

Maths

This half term, we will be following the Liverpool Maths plans with a specific focus on place value.

Children will be counting in steps of 2, 3 and 5 from 0 and in tens from any number, forward and backwards.  They will also use place value and number facts to solve problems.

There will also be a focus on addition and subtraction. Children will solve problems with addition and subtraction. They will also recognise and use the inverse relationship between addition and subtraction and use this to check calculations and solve missing number problems. Children will also be developing their basic maths skills on a daily basis.

Come and See

In the Autumn Term, we will explore the topics, Beginnings and Signs and Symbols.

Science

Our topic will be Uses of Everyday Materials. Within this topic we will identify and compare the suitability of a variety of everyday materials.

We will also find out how the shapes of solid objects made from some materials can be changed by squashing, bending, twisting and stretching.

Computing

During this term, we will be games testers. We will explore how computer games work.

The children will try to work out how some simple Scratch games work. They will also look at free online or open source games.

History

This term, we will be finding out about What was life like when our grandparents were children.

We will be creating timelines of their lives, how have they grown and changed and understanding why their past is important.

We will look at photographs/books/artefacts of how toys have changed over time.

We will find out about how/if school has changed since our parents and grandparents attended. Was the uniform the same? Did they learn about the same subjects?

We will be reading 'The Patchwork Quilt'by Valerie Flournoy. and linking this to our DESIGN TECHNOLOGY when we design, make and evaluate our own piece of class patchwork quilt.

Geography

In Geography, we will be looking at 'Where we live'. We will Use maps and atlas' to locate where we live

and ask ourselves 'What do they know about Liverpool?'

From this we shall look further afield and name, locate and identify characteristics of the four countries and capital cities of the United Kingdom and its surrounding seas.

ART

We will be developing our sketch book work this half term by exploring basic skills in Art-We will focus on colour mixing with primary colours as well as using different methods and materials.

Music

Music will be taught by Mrs Delve.

Get Set For Life

This will be taught on a weekly basis by Mrs Clein.

PE

Our PE days this term will be on

It is highly recommended that your child always has a full kit n school, bringing it in on a Monday and taking it home on a Friday as this is beneficial in the case of incidental opportunities for exercise. If, for any reason, your child is unable to do PE, we would appreciate it if you could send a note in to the class teacher explaining the expected duration of this inability to participate.

Should you ever wish to discuss anything about your child, please do not hesitate to contact a member of the Year 2 team in order to arrange an appointment. We will be on the exit gate every evening or, you can contact the office if you wish to request an appointment.
