Y2H 2017 - 2018

Miss Holme

Year 2 Teacher

Welcome to Year 2 at Holy Family. We hope that during the year you will enjoy finding out about all the wonderful things we will be learning in our lessons.

The teachers in year 2 this year are Miss Holme and Mrs Lynch.

This year, we are covering our curriculum in a slightly different way with ‘Topic Weeks’ for Science, History, Geography, Art and Design Technology. This will see us covering each topic intensively for specified weeks throughout the term. We will continue to be teaching PE  and Computing on a weekly basis with English, Phonics and Maths on a daily basis. At the heart of our teaching, we will also have our RE Curriculum which is taught in a cycle of topics. Please see below for details of our topics and curriculum.

During this half term, we will be reading 'The Patchwork Quilt' by Valerie Flournoy. From this we will be doing research to find out what life was like for our Grandparents when they were children.

We will also be reading 'Class 2 at the Zoo' by Julia Jarman. This will link to our Science topic.

In our writing we will re-tell the stories, re-write our own stories and do fact files about life in the past and animals and their habitats.

We will also have our daily phonic sessions (Read Write Inc) which will be led in ability groups across KS1. All children will receive spellings from their Read Write Inc teacher every Monday which they will bring home to learn for a test at the end of the week. We will also have daily guided reading sessions to look at reading comprehension as well as handwriting and grammar.

Children will also get a reading book for them to read at home and brought back the following week.

This half term, we will be following the Liverpool Maths plans.

We will continue with subtraction. They will also recognise and use the inverse relationship between addition and subtraction and use this to check calculations and solve missing number problems.

We will then move on to multiplication and division which we will explore practically and pictorially.
We will Solve problems involving multiplication and division, using materials, arrays, repeated addition, mental methods, and multiplication and division facts, including problems in contexts.

We will continue to have our weekly Maths of the Day lessons to develop mastery, fluency and problem solving.

Children will also be developing their basic maths skills on a daily basis.

Come and See

In the Autumn Term, we will explore the topics, Signs and Symbols and Preparations .

Our topic will be Living things and their habitats.

Pupils should be introduced to the idea that all living things have certain characteristics that are essential for keeping them alive and healthy. They should raise and answer questions that help them to become familiar with the life processes that are common to all living things.

During this term our topic is Code-tastic- The children will learn what algorithms are and how they are implemented as programs on digital devices. We will also create and debug simple programs.

This term, we will be finding out about What was life like when our grandparents were children.

We will be creating timelines of their lives, how have they grown and changed and understanding why their past is important.

We will look at photographs/books/artefacts of how toys have changed over time.

We will find out about how/if school has changed since our parents and grandparents attended. Was the uniform the same? Did they learn about the same subjects?

We will also be finding out about 'The Gunpowder Plot.'

We will be reading 'The Patchwork Quilt'by Valerie Flournoy. and linking this to our DESIGN TECHNOLOGY when we design, make and evaluate our own piece of class patchwork quilt.

We will be designing and making a Christmas pop up card.

Music will be taught by Mrs Delve.

Get Set For Life

This will be taught on a weekly basis by Mrs Clein.

Our PE days this term will be on Monday and Friday.

It is highly recommended that your child always has a full kit in school, bringing it in on a Monday and taking it home on a Friday as this is beneficial in the case of incidental opportunities for exercise. If, for any reason, your child is unable to do PE, we would appreciate it if you could send a note in to the class teacher explaining the expected duration of this inability to participate.

Should you ever wish to discuss anything about your child, please do not hesitate to contact a member of the Year 2 team in order to arrange an appointment. Alternatively you can contact the office if you wish to request an appointment.
