Y2H 2018 - 2019

Miss Holme

Year 2 Teacher

Welcome to Year 2 at Holy Family with Miss Holme and Mrs Lynch.

We hope that during the year you will enjoy finding out about all the wonderful things we will be learning about in our lessons. To keep up to date with what is happening inside our classroom follow us on twitter @HolyFamilyL8_2H

This half term we will be covering:

Come and See

Our Come and See topics are 'Signs and Symbols.’ We will begin by exploring the different signs and symbols we come across everyday.

We will then be looking at the topic 'Preparations.' We will talk about how we prepare for special events in our lives which will then lead us on to Advent-preparation for the celebration of the birth of Jesus at Christmas.

This half term we will be reading and retelling the story 'Princess and The Pea' and 'How To Trap A Dragon.' These will both be taught through Talk4Writing. From this we will be writing stories and a set of instructions. We will also be doing lots of cross curricular work, applying our Historical knowledge.

Everything we learn in English and Phonics we will be applying to other areas of the curriculum, writing sentences and narratives in other topics.

We have daily phonic lessons which are carried out in Read Write Inc and Guided Reading sessions to look at reading comprehension, as well as handwriting and grammar.

Every Monday from their Read Write Inc lessons your child will get spellings to learn at home.

We will continue to look at Addition and Subtraction, adding and subtracting numbers up to 100, using concrete objects, mental strategies, number lines and blank number lines, and partitioning. We will also keep practising our number bonds to 20 to get super speedy.

We will then  be looking at Multiplication practically and pictorally. we will learn that multiplication is arrays as well as repeated addition. From this we will apply what we have learnt through problem solving and reasoning activities.

we will begin this term by completing our topic 'Uses of Everyday Materials'. We will carry out different investigations based on what we found out about materials last term.

We will then begin our topic 'Living things and Their Habitats.' In this topic we will explore and compare the differences between living things that are living, dead and things that have never been alive.

We will be learning about Castles. During this topic we will look at the purpose of a castle, types of castle and who lives in a castle. We will then find out about and compare Liverpool Castle and Beeston Castle.

We will be learning about why castles are situated where they are, looking at the physical features around them.

Art and DT

We will draw the different features of Beeston Castle and design and make a 3D castle, using a mechanism.

In Music we will be using our voices to sing with increased confidence developing an awareness of other performers.

Get Set for Life

We will be looking at the topic 'Getting On and Falling Out' with Mrs Clein.

P.E. is every Tuesday morning and Thursday afternoon, so P.E. kits will need to be brought in on these days every week. During these sessions we will be focussing on Agility, Balance and Control, and Basketball.

Should you ever wish to discuss anything about your child, please do not hesitate to contact a member of the Year 2 team in order to arrange an appointment. Alternatively you can contact the office if you wish to request an appointment.

We look forward to working with your children this year!
