Y3M 2019 - 2020

Miss McClelland

Year 2 Teacher

Welcome to Year 3M!

Our teacher is Miss McClelland. We will be supported by Mrs Heneghan, Mr McKeen, Miss McAndrew and Miss Simms.

We will be sharing lots of photographs of all our fabulous work on our Twitter class page. Follow us @HolyFamilyL8_3M

Homework is given out on a Friday and is due back by the following Thursday. There will be a Maths focus and an English focus.

This half term we will be covering:

Come and See

Our Come and See topics are  'Promises' where we explore that belonging to a group involves promises and rules and reveal the Sacrament of Baptism and meaning of the promises made and 'Visitors' where we explore the joys and demands of visitors and reveal Advent: waiting for the coming of Jesus.

This half term we will be looking at a Quest tale from 'The Firework Maker's Daughter ' by Phillip Pullman. We will be describing the setting of the tale, using expanded noun phrases and adverbs. We will be looking at the use of inverted commas to develop speech in our characters and plot. We will also be using Fronted Adverbials in our writing, eg. One sunny morning, we went to the beach. Fortunately, I found £20 on the floor.  We will be learning how to use apostrophes for contraction and apostrophes for possession. We will also be revising all of our grammar from Year 2: adjectives, nouns, verbs, adverbs, past tense and present tense, adding suffixes and using punctuation in sentences, questions and exclamation sentences.

Everything we learn in English and Phonics we will be applying to other areas of the curriculum, writing paragraphs and narratives in other topics.

We have daily spelling or phonic lessons which are carried out through Read Write Inc. We also have daily Guided Reading sessions to look at reading fluency, comprehension and inference skills. We also look at writing using cursive handwriting and key grammar skills.

Every Monday from their Read Write Inc lessons your child will get spellings to learn at home. Can these please be returned on Friday?

We will be looking at Addition and Subtraction. We will be using place value to add and subtract three-digit numbers, including using the column method, applying this to two-step word problems and reasoning activities. Then we will be looking at Multiplication and Division. We will be learning to multiply and divide using arrays, repeated addition and subtraction, expanded methods and grid methods.

Our topic this term will be 'Rocks', looking at comparing and grouping together different kinds of rocks on the basis of their appearance and simple physical properties, describing how fossils are formed when things that have lived are trapped in rock, and recognising that soils are made from rocks and organic matter.

We will be focussing upon Mountains and Volcanoes. We will learn about how mountains and volcanoes are formed from tectonic plates, how the Earth has changed over time, comparing different types of volcanoes, identifying mountains and volcanoes on UK and world maps, and using four-figure grid references on OS maps.

Art and DT

We will be looking at the artwork of Georgia O'Keeffe, 'Oriental Poppies'. We will be exploring how we can use paint with different brushes, use paint to create different shades and the colour wheel for primary and secondary colours. We will then observe closely to draw and paint our own flowers in the style of Georgia O'Keeffe.

We will be looking at 'We Love Games', creating their own flow chart algorithm, identifying types of games, and designing and creating our own algorithm for a game on Sketch Nation.

We will be learning how to play the Glockenspiel, beginning to read musical notation to play certain notes.

Get Set for Life

We will be looking at Getting On and Falling Out with Mrs Clein. The children will explore how to identify bullying and how to resolve disputes within and outside of class.

P.E. is every Tuesday afternoon so P.E. kits will need to be brought in every week. We are learning about Gymnastics with Mrs Wilding and Mr McKeen. We also do the Daily Mile three times a week, where we run around our playground, aiming to reach 9 laps (1 mile).

We hope you continue to enjoy looking at all the wonderful things we will be doing in class on our Twitter.
