Y3M 2019 - 2020

Miss McClelland

Year 2 Teacher

Welcome to Year 3M!

Our teacher is Miss McClelland. We will be supported by Mr McKeen, Miss McAndrew and Miss Simms.

We will be sharing lots of photographs of all our fabulous work on our Twitter class page. Follow us @HolyFamilyL8_3M

Homework is given out on a Friday and is due back by the following Thursday. There will be a Maths focus and an English focus.

This half term we will be covering:

Come and See

Our Come and See topics are  'Journeys' where we explore a journey through the year and reveal the Christian family's journey with Jesus through the Church's year and 'Listening and Sharing' where we explore listening and sharing with each other and reveal listening to the Word of God and sharing in Holy Communion.

This half term we will be looking at a Rags to Riches tale from the traditional tale, 'The Egyptian Cinderella '. We will be writing character descriptions using comparative language, using expanded noun phrases and adverbs. We will be looking at the use of inverted commas to develop speech in our characters and plot. We will also be using Fronted Adverbials in our writing, eg. One sunny morning, we went to the beach. Fortunately, I found £20 on the floor.  We will be learning how to use apostrophes for contraction and apostrophes for possession. We will also continue to look at grammar and punctuation: adjectives, nouns, verbs, adverbs, past tense and present tense, adding suffixes, commas in a list and using punctuation in sentences, questions and exclamation sentences.

Everything we learn in English and Phonics we will be applying to other areas of the curriculum, writing paragraphs, narratives and information reports in other topics.

We have daily spelling or phonic lessons which are carried out through Read Write Inc. We also have daily Guided Reading sessions to look at reading fluency, comprehension and inference skills. We also look at writing using cursive handwriting and key grammar skills.

Every Monday from their Read Write Inc lessons your child will get spellings to learn at home. Can these please be returned on Friday?

We will be looking at Division. We will be learning to divide using concrete equipment, arrays, repeated subtraction, grouping and sharing before moving on to short division. We will be applying this through multiplication and division as inverse operations, missing box questions, one and two step questions, reasoning and problem solving. We will then be moving on to Fractions. We will be recognising and finding fractions of quantities, shapes and lengths, finding simple equivalent fractions, comparing and ordering fractions with the same denominator, counting up and down in fractions (halves, quarters, thirds, tenths), dividing one-digit numbers by 10 and solving simple problems.

Our topic this term will be 'Light', recognising that we need light in order to see things, that darkness is the absence of light, light is reflected from surfaces, light from the sun can be dangerous so we have to protect our eyes, shadows are formed when a light source is blocked by a solid object and find patterns in the way that the size of shadows change.

We will be learning about the Ancient Egyptians. We will be developing our understanding of chronology through timelines looking at duration, developing our knowledge of historical terminology, understanding how our knowledge of the past is contructed from a range of historical sources, learning about key historical people, events and places, and noting similarities and differences between then and now. We will do this by looking at Ancient Egyptian artefacts, the Rosetta Stone and cartouches, learning about the purpose of the Pyramids, a timeline of the Pharaohs and the importance of the River Nile, what life was like for Ancient Egyptians, their beliefs in gods and goddesses and the discovering of King Tutankhamun's tomb. We will be linking it to our Geographical knowledge by devising a map of Ancient Egypt with key physical and human landmarks.

Art and DT

We will be desiging and making a sunglasses case using Textiles. We will investigate existing products to create a specification, practising some sewing skills and tie-dying/batik skills, create an accurate sketch of our design, related to the purpose, audience and specification, creating our sunglasses case using a template and joining pieces together, before finally evaluating our product.

We will be looking at 'Get Blogging', looking at typing and word processing, using a blog on our school website and then creating our own blogs.

We will be learning about Reggae music through 'Three Little Birds', beginning to read musical notation to play certain notes and sing in tune.

Get Set for Life

We will be looking at Going for Goals with Mrs Clein. The children will explore goal setting, growth mindset and look at people who inspire us.

P.E. is every Tuesday and Wednesday so P.E. kits will need to be worn on these days. We are learning about Tennis with Mrs Wilding and Mr McKeen. We are lucky to have Sale Sharks visiting us on a Wednesday to learn Tag Rugby and how to keep healthy. We also do the Daily Mile three times a week, where we run around our playground, aiming to reach 9 laps (1 mile).

MFL Spanish

Every Wednesday we have a visit from Melissa who teaches us Spanish. This half term we are looking at days and months, reading and writing numbers 1-10 and talking about our birthdays.

We hope you continue to enjoy looking at all the wonderful things we will be doing in class on our Twitter.
