Miss Lawne

Year 4 Teacher

Welcome to Year 4 at Holy Family with Miss Lawne and Mr Smith!

We hope that during the year you will enjoy finding out about all the wonderful things we will be learning in our lessons. To keep up to date with what is happening inside our classroom follow us on twitter.

This year, we are covering our curriculum in a slightly different way with ‘Topic Weeks’ for Science, History, Geography, Art and Design Technology. This will see us covering each topic intensively for specified weeks throughout the term. We will continue to be teaching PE  and Computing on a weekly basis with English, Phonics and Maths on a daily basis. At the heart of our teaching, we will also have our RE Curriculum which is taught in a cycle of topics. Please see below for details of our topics and curriculum.

English

Our class novel for the first term is George's Marvellous Medicine by Roald Dahl. We will be using this novel to help us write recounts, diaries and focus on descriptive language used within the book for characters and settings.

All children will have phonics or spellings sessions, which will be led in ability groups across KS1 and 2. They will receive spellings from their Read Write Inc teacher, which they will bring home to learn for a test at the end of the week. We will also have daily guided reading sessions to look at reading comprehension as well as handwriting and grammar.

Children will also have a reading book each week to read at home and this needs to be brought back the following week.

Maths

This half term, we will be following the Liverpool Maths plans with a specific focus on Number and Place Value.

There will also be a focus on Addition and Subtraction. Children will learn how to calculate mentally and use formal written methods to solve problems. They will also recognise and use the inverse relationship between addition and subtraction and use this to check calculations and solve missing number problems.

Children will also be developing their mathematical fluency skills during basic skills sessions, which take place three times a week. These sessions will focus on counting and learning number bonds and time tables. It is important that you practise times tables with your children at home to help support in school.

Come and See

In the Autumn Term, we will explore the topics Homes, Promises and Visitors.

Science

Our topics this half term will be Rocks, Animals Including Humans and Light. For Rocks, we will be able to compare and group rocks based on their physical properties, recognise how soils are made and be able to describe how fossils are formed. When studying Animals Including Humans, we will learn about nutrition in animals. For light, we will recognise that we need light to see, understand that it can be reflected and the sun's light is dangerous and investiagte shadows.

Computing

During this term, we will explore how to be safe online and how to use the web for research. The children will then begin to look at programming using 2code and Kodu.

History

This term, we will be learning about the Stone Age.

Geography

In Geography, we will be looking at 'Where on Earth are we?'.

Art/DT

For DT, we will be designing and making bread and for Art we will be designing and creating cave paintings.

Music

Music will be taught by Mrs Delve.

Get Set For Life

This will be taught on a weekly basis by Mrs Clein.

PE

Our PE day this term is a Tuesday.

It is highly recommended that your child always has a full kit in school, bringing it in on a Monday and taking it home on a Friday, as this is beneficial in the case of incidental opportunities for exercise. If, for any reason, your child is unable to do PE, we would appreciate it if you could send a note in to the class teacher explaining the expected duration of this inability to participate.

Should you ever wish to discuss anything about your child, please do not hesitate to contact a member of the Year 4 team in order to arrange an appointment. We will be on the exit gate every evening or, you can contact the office if you wish to request an appointment.

We look forward to working with your children this year!
