Y5T 2017 - 2018

Miss Toal

Year 5 Teacher

Welcome to Year 5 at Holy Family with Miss Toal and Ms Roper!

We hope that during the year you will enjoy finding out about all the wonderful things we will be learning in our lessons. To keep up to date with what is happening inside our classroom follow us on twitter @HolyFamilyL8_5T

This year, we are covering our curriculum in a slightly different way with ‘Topic Weeks’ for Science, History, Geography, Art and Design Technology. This will see us covering each topic intensively for specified weeks throughout the term. We will continue to be teaching PE  and Computing on a weekly basis with English, Phonics and Maths on a daily basis. At the heart of our teaching, we will also have our RE Curriculum which is taught in a cycle of topics. Please see below for details of our topics and curriculum.

PE: Our PE this term will be on Monday and Wednesday.

Should you ever wish to discuss anything about your child, please do not hesitate to contact a member of the Year 5 team in order to arrange an appointment. We will be on the exit door every evening or, you can contact the office if you wish to request an appointment.

Come and See

Our final topic of the year will be Stewardship. Throughout this topic, we call on CAFOD and their Universal Church resources to help us to answer the following questions:

· What do I really care about?

· How can I show concern for what I care for?

· How can I be a steward of creation?

We will know and understand all about caring for the Earth, being called within the Church to the stewardship of Creation and we will also develop the skills of assimilation and celebration.

English

In English, we will be further developing our understanding of writing ‘warning stories’, being able to identify key features for our Toolkit and using these in our own writing. We will also be further developing our inference and deduction skills both by interpreting still images and animations and also by reading quality texts...

Maths

We will be learning about statistics, furthering our understanding of how to collect and interpret different sets of data. We will also be consolidating and extending our knowledge and application of the four number operations in the context of problem solving. We will also continue to do Active Maths sessions – which we all love!

Science

In Science this term, we will be linking in with ‘Health Week’ in school in order to look at the impact of a healthy diet and exercise. We will plan and carry out our own investigations around this topic.

DT

Our Design Technology lessons will also link to Health Week. We will be looking at food technology, planning, producing and evaluating a healthy meal or drink. (This may include taste testing – prior to which, a food allergy letter will be sent home.)

History

In History, we will be beginning a study on the Maya, aiming to answer the question, ‘Why should we remember the Maya?’ We will be exploring the world of the Maya, and looking at why most of the civilisation seemed to die out at around 900AD.

PE

PE this term will be run by a qualified dance instructor who will work with the children to further develop their dance skills. Children will also take part in inter class athletics alongside our partner Year 5 class where we will develop running, jumping and throwing skills.

Art

Our art lessons this half term will be linked to our Computing lessons where we will be studying famous buildings in Liverpool. We will be developing our photography skills whilst studying buildings which hold importance to our local area.

We look forward to working with your children this year!
