RSHE

At Holy Family Catholic Primary School, our PSHE/RSHE curriculum is designed to provide a high-quality, inclusive and ambitious education that enables every child to flourish academically, socially, emotionally and spiritually. Through a carefully sequenced and progressive curriculum, we aim to ensure that all pupils know more, remember more and understand more over time, equipping them with the knowledge, skills and values needed to lead safe, healthy, respectful and fulfilling lives both now and in the future.

Our bespoke curriculum, Get Set for Life, supports pupils in becoming healthy, independent, resilient and responsible members of society. Rooted in our Catholic ethos and values, the curriculum promotes the dignity and worth of every individual while preparing pupils for life in modern Britain. Through purposeful and age-appropriate learning experiences, pupils develop a secure understanding of themselves, their relationships and the wider world, while exploring the moral, social and cultural issues they may encounter as they grow and develop.

At Holy Family, we are committed to ensuring that all children feel safe, valued and heard. We provide meaningful opportunities for pupils to learn about rights, responsibilities, relationships and emotional wellbeing, while fostering empathy, respect and appreciation for diversity. Pupils are encouraged to develop confidence, resilience and a positive sense of self-worth so that they are empowered to contribute positively to school life, their local community and society as a whole.

In line with the wider curriculum intent at Holy Family Catholic Primary School, our PSHE/RSHE curriculum aims to:

  • Develop resilient individuals with strong moral character who are able to manage challenge, change and adversity positively;
  • Encourage creative, collaborative and reflective learners who can solve problems effectively and view mistakes as opportunities for growth;
  • Foster critical thinkers who take pride in their learning and strive to achieve their personal best;
  • Nurture pupils who understand and value their role within families, communities and wider society, promoting respect, compassion and an understanding of fundamental British Values;
  • Raise aspirations and encourage pupils to recognise and fulfil their potential;
  • Develop emotionally literate pupils who can communicate effectively, build positive relationships and make informed decisions;
  • Inspire a lifelong love of learning and curiosity about the world around them.

Our curriculum is further enriched through planned opportunities to promote British Values, SMSC (Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural development), safeguarding awareness, key life skills and our school learning values. In addition, we use the No Outsiders programme to support pupils’ understanding of equality, diversity and inclusion, ensuring that the protected characteristics identified within the Equality Act 2010 are explored in an age-appropriate and meaningful way. Through high-quality texts, discussion and reflection, pupils develop an understanding of respect, acceptance and belonging, helping to create a school culture where diversity is celebrated and everyone feels included and valued.

The curriculum is carefully sequenced from Reception through to Year 6 to ensure progression in knowledge, vocabulary and life skills. Key concepts are revisited and built upon over time, enabling pupils to embed learning into their long-term memory and apply their understanding confidently in a range of contexts. Learning is responsive to the needs of our pupils and reflects both local and national priorities.

Where appropriate, learning is linked to national and global awareness events, including Anti-Bullying Week, Children’s Mental Health Week, Neurodiversity Celebration Week, Black History Month and Refugee Week, enabling pupils to make meaningful connections between their learning and real-life experiences.

To further enhance and enrich our provision, we work closely with a range of external agencies and professionals, including the Mental Health Support Team (MHST), local police services and Bully Busters. These partnerships strengthen pupils’ understanding of healthy relationships, emotional wellbeing, personal safety, respectful behaviour and anti-bullying strategies through workshops, assemblies and targeted support.

We recognise that strong partnerships between home and school are fundamental to children’s wellbeing and development. As part of our whole-school approach, we provide support for parents and carers through programmes such as The Incredible Years, alongside guidance and workshops delivered in partnership with the MHST. These initiatives support families in developing healthy relationships, positive routines, effective boundaries and positive parenting strategies. This collaborative and systemic approach reflects the importance we place on nurturing healthy, respectful and positive relationships across our entire school community.
