Intent

At Holy Family, the Art and Design curriculum is designed to inspire pupils to become creative, confident and reflective artists, who are able to express their ideas, thoughts and feelings through a wide range of media and techniques.

Our curriculum ensures that pupils develop practical skills, technical knowledge and artistic understanding progressively from EYFS to Year 6. Pupils explore drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, textiles and digital media, building on prior learning each year to develop increasing control, independence and sophistication.

We have carefully sequenced our curriculum so that pupils revisit and deepen their understanding of key concepts such as line, colour, tone, texture, pattern, form and composition, enabling them to apply these with greater confidence over time.

Exposure to a diverse range of artists – including Monet, Matisse, Hokusai, Banksy and Lowry – ensures that pupils develop an appreciation of art across different cultures, historical periods and styles, and understand how art reflects identity and the wider world.

Through this, we aim for all pupils to:

  • develop a love of art and creativity
  • become independent thinkers who can experiment and take risks
  • gain the ability to evaluate and refine their work
  • understand the importance of art in culture, history and modern society
