Welcome to Year 4 at Holy Family with Miss Bedgood & Miss Roper.

Come and See 

  • New life: Y4 will learn how good news brings life and how new life of the Easter message is spread through the power of the Holy Spirit. Children will acquire the skills of assimilation and celebration.
  • Building bridges: Children will learn about building bridges of friendship and the importance of admitting wrong and being reconciled with God and one another. Y4 will acquire the skills assimilation and celebration.

Maths

Y4 will start this half term by developing our understanding of money. They will learn to:

  • Recognise pounds and pence
  • Order money
  • Estimate money
  • Convert pounds and pence
  • Add and subtract different amounts of money
  • Find change
  • Use the four operations to solve money problems.

They will also develop their understanding of time. They will learn to:

  • Convert between different units of measure e.g. hour to minute.
  • Read, write & convert time between analogue and digital 12 and 14 hour clocks
  • Solve problems involving converting from hours to minutes; minutes to seconds; years to months; weeks to days

English

This half term, year 4 will be reading ‘FArTHER’ by Grahame Baker- Smith.  Children will learn how to write a journey tale and a set of instructions.  Year 4 will learn how to use abstract nouns to enhance setting description, write a problem with a cliff hanger and end a story using a rhetorical question to create a sense of mystery!  In non- fiction writing, children will learn to organise writing into sections: title, introduction, things you will need, method, final sentence.

Science

This half term, our science topic is sound. Children will learn to:

  • Identify how sounds are made, associating some of them with something vibrating
  • Recognise that vibrations from sound travel through a medium to the ear
  • find patterns between the pitch of a sound and features of the object that produced it
  • Find patterns between the volume of a sound and the strength of the vibrations that produced it.
  • Recognise that sounds get fainter as the distance from the sound source increases.

Geography

The children will be learning about mountains. They will learn about the six highest mountains in the world and locate them on a map. They will also use four-figure grid reference and co-ordinates to locate mountainous regions. As well as this, they will identify the significance of the Arctic and Antarctic Circle.

DT

Year 4 will be learning about food and nutrition. They will learn what makes a healthy and varied diet before they design and make their own healthy sandwiches using ingredients from around the world.

Spanish 

This half term, the children will be learning about sports and hobbies (verbs). They will recap days of the week, seasons and numbers 1 – 69.

Computing 

This half term, Year 4 will learn about a topic called ‘Back to the future’. In this project, children will create their own PowerPoint detailing what they learn from researching about different technologies, inventors and the different components of a computer.

PE 

This half term, the PE focus in year 4 is athletics.  Children will develop basic running, throwing and jumping techniques and will be set challenges that involve using different styles and combinations of running, throwing and jumping.

Music

Year 4 will continue with their ukulele lessons this half term. They will begin to understand timbre and be able to recognise instruments and voices by their timbre. They will begin to play pieces of music with more difficult chord changes and will create a simple melody using the chord D minor.
