Y5 will develop their skills of converting between different units of metric measure (for example, kilometre and metre; centimetre and metre; centimetre and millimetre; gram and kilogram; litre and millilitre). They will learn about approximate equivalences between metric units and common imperial units, such as, inches, pounds and pints. The children will further develop their learning of perimeter, area and volume.

We will also be consolidating our understanding and knowledge of other areas of grammar and the related terminology. A list of specific spellings, which we will be concentrating on each week, will be sent home for your child to learn as well as being updated weekly on Spelling Shed.

Science

Year 5 will study forces this half term. They will learn that unsupported objects fall towards the Earth because of the force of gravity acting between the Earth and the falling object. They will learn about the effect of air resistance, water resistance and friction that act between moving surfaces. The children will learn to recognise that some mechanisms (including levers, pulleys and gears) allow a smaller force to have a greater effect.

Geography and History

This term, we will be learning how land changes over time, focusing on the airport, and the history of Liverpool John Lennon Airport. We are very excited to be going on a trip to John Lennon Airport.

DT

Y5 will be tasting and making Mediterranean food. We will use vegetables that have been grown in our school allotment area. We are looking forward to some delicious, healthy food!

This half term the children will be creating music using both Scratch and Makey-Makey devices. They will learn how to create and then later how to connect, control and programme Makey-Makey devices to control the code created.

PE

Y5’s PE lessons this half term will focus on basketball. Children MUST have full PE kits every week for these sessions; white T-Shirt, black shorts and black trainers/pumps. Children will also be regularly working on improving their stamina by walking/ jogging/ running a ‘Daily Mile’.

Homework

Homework will be set on a Friday to be returned the following Friday. The children will receive maths, reading and grammar activities which must be completed and returned to school the following week. We will be tracking when the children return their homework. If a child does not bring their homework in, we will send a text message reminder to parents. Alongside the written homework, reading daily for at least 15 minutes is also an expectation as well as bringing their reading books into school each day. It is vital that the children are encouraged to do this to achieve the high expectations set for the end of Key Stage 2. We have provided children with logins for many educational sites so that they can practise their learning on Spelling Shed, Maths Shed, Timestables Rockstars and Reading Plus.
